What’s On Your Mind?

You can spend five hours in prayer and still live defeated. Not because prayer is weak, but because you never dealt with what was reigning in your mind while you prayed.

This message opens 1 Peter 4 with a single question that refuses to let go: what are you allowing to sit on your mind? Peter writes to believers under pressure, people whose neighbours have started calling their new life strange, and his instruction is not to manage their circumstances but to arm their thinking. The image is a runner tucking a long garment into a belt so it cannot trip him. Loose thinking entangles. Sober thinking runs.

From there the message moves through three things worth minding.

First, your union with Christ. The cross was not only Jesus dying for you, it was Jesus dying as you, the just becoming the unjust so that nothing of the old you survived the resurrection. Sin, then, is what you do when you forget who you are.

Second, others. The opinions of people are grass, beautiful for a fortnight and then dying vegetation, yet the love that covers a multitude of sins is not your love at all. It is God's love working in you before it ever works through you, and it has enough courage in it to go to a brother directly instead of dressing an offence up as a prayer request.

Third, suffering. When the fiery trial comes, the word that steadies you is the one Peter opens with: beloved.

In this message
  • Why "gird up the loins of your mind" is a running instruction, not a spiritual one
  • The difference between dying with Christ and dying as Christ, and why it changes how you fight sin
  • Grumbling as a fuel gauge, an indicator light rather than a character flaw
  • How love that covers sin still has hard conversations
  • Living from God instead of living for God, and why burnout follows the second
  • Your circumstances are the worst barometer of how God feels about you. Press play and change what you are measuring by.

Some wording on this page was corrected as the episode came in from the podcast feed, where the title or the punctuation did not match the way we write.
